Before we start on the path to understanding how a domain name is transferred from one registrar to another, here are few must-know definitions you should know:

Domain Name: Your domain name is nothing but your website name; it’s simply an address where internet users can access your website. Domain name is generally used to search and identify computers on the web. Computers use Internet Protocol (IP) address -- a numeric tag allocated to every device connected to a network which uses the Internet for communication. The primary functions of IP address are an identification of host & network interface and to address locations. It is inconvenient for humans to keep strings of numbers in mind. This is the most important reason why domain names were developed. They are used to identify entities on the internet rather than using an IP address. Ideally, a domain name must be registered before you begin using it. Every domain name is unique. No two websites can have the same domain name. If someone types in www.yourdomain.com, it will go to your website and no one else's.

Registrar: These are the organizations that manage reservation of domains. Basically, it’s a place from where you acquire your domain name.

Domain Name System (DNS): DNS is a system that is used by the Internet for conversion of a domain name into an IP address.

What is Domain Transfer?

Domain Transfer is a service that enables you to transfer your domain from one registrar to another. In other words, domain transfer is when you move a domain from one place to another. Fundamentally, there are 2 types of transfers:

  1. Internal: Transfer takes place between accounts of the same registrars. This is also termed as a ‘Move’.
  2. External: Transfer takes place from an account of one registrar to another.

Here is a list of requirements that must be met for successful domain transfer:

  • One must check the domain status code and make sure that the domain name that is to be transferred is in ‘active’ status before initiating the transfer.
  • The purchaser should have access to domain’s EPP/Authorization code and administrative email id.
  • A domain name should be 60 days old (minimum).
  • The active ID protection should be disabled before the transfer process.

Why do people transfer domains?

Not all domain registrars provide the same services. Services may vary from the features they provide to the how reliable they are. Usually, an owner wouldn’t want to transfer a domain until he realizes the registrar he is with is going out of business. However, your domain is yours, and you have all rights to transfer it. Below are some reasons why people transfer domains:

  • People tend to find much better features/services at a lower cost.
  • If the services and policies offered by the registrar aren’t liked by the owner.
  • There are situations when the owner feels the need to combine domains registered with numerous registrars.

Let’s see how Host.co.in makes domain transfer simpler for you:

If you wish to transfer your domain from any other registrar to host.co.in, it can be done by implementing the steps below:

Step 1: Domain owners should contact their current registrar and to obtain the Authorization code of their domain name.

Step 2: Once the Authorization code is received by us, a transfer request will be initiated to our domain registrar.

Step 3: Once the transfer is initiated, a transfer request verification email will be sent to the domain's administrative contact email id within 8 hours.

Step 4: Transfer request needs to be approved and accepted by the domain owners.

Step 5: Once the transfer request has been approved and accepted, the domain name is expected to get transferred to our registrar control which is ENOM within the 5-6 days.
